Hypocrisy In The Knights Tale And The Wife Of Bath

In the Canterbury Tales a variety of characters are mentioned, many of which fit into well-known societal roles. Some of these characters, however, are quite hypocritical and do not follow the standards set upon them either by themselves or by society. Two wonderful examples of this hypocrisy can be found in The Knight’s Tale and The Tale of The Wife of Bath. A pair of knights that appear in The Knight’s Tale displayed this regarding chivalry while The Tale of The Wife of Bath showed hypocrisy towards consent. The Knight’s Tale began by introducing a knight named Theseus, the lord and governor of Athens. On his venture home after marrying, he encountered a group of women, shrouded in black clothes and filled with sorrow. When asked why†¦show more content†¦Having heard his wife and sister-in-law’s pleas for mercy upon the men Theseus did not kill them and instead instructed them to each assemble an army and that in one year they would battle for h er hand. The two men later returned with their armies and a tournament was held, Arcita being the victor, however, after a sudden earthquake he was thrown from his horse and mortally wounded. With his final breaths Arcita tells Emily that nobody could be a better husband for her than Palamon and after a speech by Theseus Emily marries him. Hypocrisy is displayed in this tale through the two knights of Thebes. Arcita and Palamon are royal knights are meant to be chivalrous, as expected of any knight during this time. Knights during this time were expected to be the ideal man, being honest, honorable, and courteous. The tale quickly presents Theseus and gives the impression that he is a chivalrous knight as it states, â€Å"Giving them comfort understandingly: And he sword his oath, that as he was true knight, He would put forth so thoroughly his might Against the tyrant Creon† Theseus is selfless and happy to help the women, seeking nothing from it for himself. Shortly after this though the knights of Thebes are introduced, and it is quickly apparent that they do not follow chivalry. Bill Gates and DOS Operating System Free Essays

Bill Gates has proven himself to be the wealthiest man alive. He initiated the monster computer software business called Microsoft and has produced the most widely used computer software programs to date. Bill Gates is a transgressive person meaning he has both helped society progressively and regressively. We will write a custom essay sample on Bill Gates and DOS Operating System or any similar topic only for you Order Now Bill Gates has progressively helped our society by introducing the basic operating system DOS in 1983. This basic operating system consisted of a single prompt, which allowed the user to complete tasks by typing in the right command line. When the press asked Gates what it took to create the Dos operating system, he replied, â€Å"Well, to create a new standard, it takes something that†s not just a little bit different. It takes something that†s really new and really captures people†s imagination.† (Microsoft Conference on Dos, 1984) When people saw the operating system, they were awestruck. Over ten million copies of Dos where sold during the first two years of sales. Society benefited from this operating system. By using it to run programs easily and efficiently, the Dos network allowed a whole new frontier of micro-management for businesses. Transactions could be saved to hard drives and easily located for later use. The average home computer user would have to take computer courses to learn the basic operations of the interfaces, which were available at the time. Dos offers a short instruction manual and also a set of easily understood operations. After Microsoft had gained control of the market with the Dos operating system, Bill Gates and his company Microsoft started on a new program that again would change the market. This alteration would not be in the home computer region, but the programming industry. The program was called the OS/2. â€Å"I believe Os/2 is destined to be the most important operating system, and possibly program, of all time. As the successor to Dos, which has over 10,000,000 system in use, it creates opportunities for everyone involved in Pc†s.† (Bill Gates, Os/2 Programmer†s guide). The program was a simple interface which made creating programs efficient and easy. Low-level programmers could write unthinkable programs in a fraction of the time it would take a team of programmers to complete programs. With this technology, programs that would help our society where brought to our reach faster. After setting up these two major projects, Bill Gates and Microsoft released windows 1.0. This version of Microsoft†s operating system was the first of many steps in the evolution of Microsoft being the monopoly it is today. The windows operating system allowed non-computer lingual people to manipulate a computer with ease. The progressive program allowed families to use their home computers to educate and entertain themselves. The major flaw with the windows operating system was that Bill gates and Microsoft produced windows with the basic drop-down menu. Macintosh had already copyrighted this, later; they brought Microsoft to court over the matter and won their settlement. With Microsoft windows being run on most PC†s, Bill Gates and Microsoft began work for upgrades. Through the evolution of technology, Microsoft has made four new version of the windows operating system, each one bettering the last. The interface has gotten more and more user-friendly. With the most recent version, windows 2000, you can actually learn all of the operations through the program†s tutorial. This self-education application allows easy understanding and use for the users. The Internet has attracted many people to buy a computer and with the windows operating system, users will have no problem adapting to the computer environment. One of the more recent programs that Microsoft has initiated is the Internet explorer. This program has progressively helped many businesses start web pages and has also allowed families get connected to the Internet. While the Internet explorer does help our society progressively, at the same time, it regressively helped the workers of Netscape Navigator. Microsoft included the Internet explorer free with every windows operating system package, starting from Windows 95 and up. Microsoft single handedly took control of the Internet browsing business. This made Netscape, the makers of Netscape navigator; make cutbacks in regards to their employees. Netscape brought Microsoft to court and won. Although the courts decision was guilty, it has not affected direct sales of their product. Bill Gates has also affected our society in regressive or negative ways. Over the course of Bill Gate†s working career with Microsoft, he has accumulated a wealth of $119.704 billion dollars. The U.S, population is only 274,231,556 as of Thursday, February 10, 2000. This means that each person has contributed $436.507 dollars toward his wealth, whether or not they are buying Microsoft products or not. While many people do not even own a computer, they have contributed to Microsoft through taxes and other means of financial Microsoft in itself is a regressive business when looked at through the eyes of a computer software business. Bill Gates almost ruined Macintosh Computer, but decided that it would be better to own them, rather then end the business. He now has turned them into an even larger corporation then before. † The next generation of interesting software will be made on a Macintosh, not on an IBM PC.† (Bill Gates, 1996) Bill Gates meant that he believes that the Macintosh will be the computer for tomorrow, not an IBM PC. By owning a large chunk of the Computer software industry, Microsoft has become a national monopoly. Most small time businesses cannot offer competition to a corporation such as Microsoft. Finally, Bill Gates has had a transgressive hold on society ever since the Microsoft Corporation began. He has helped our society by making the operating systems made by Microsoft and the other programs offered, available to us. Through the operating systems: stocks have risen, people are becoming open to the world through the Internet, and important medical research can be accomplished as well as hundreds of other useful task. Explore Shakespeares presentation of Prospero in The Tempest Essay Example For Students

Explore Shakespeares presentation of Prospero in The Tempest Essay Explore Shakespeares presentation of Prospero in The Tempest.  Definition of good as it is in the Chambers Dictionary, 1999;  good, having suitable or desirable qualities; promoting health, welfare or happiness; virtuous; pious; benevolent; well-behaved  Definition of evil as it is in the Chambers Dictionary, 1999;  evil, wicked or bad mischievous; very disagreeable or angry; unfortunate  In The Tempest, one is initially confused by Shakespeares portrayal of Prospero, which appears to reveal a man torn between his good and bad intentions. He uses magic for both benign and malignant reasons and could be interpreted as a mixture of both a good man and an evil man. We will write a custom essay on Explore Shakespeares presentation of Prospero in The Tempest specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The plot belongs to the world of myth and folklore. In media res Prospero, the former Duke of Milan, and his young daughter Miranda were exiled to a nameless and barren island, by Prosperos ambitious brother, Antonio. Prospero uses his time on the island to develop his skills in magic. With this magical power he is able to control the airy spirit Ariel, and the savage and deformed slave Caliban whom he keeps as servants. The title relates to these chores that Prospero makes Caliban and Ariel do as the tempest which causes the enemy characters to appear on the island is fabricated by Ariel, who is under Prosperos command. Caliban, a product of a sexual union between a witch and an incubus, fascinates the audience almost immediately as their attention is drawn to his name, whether it be an anagram of cannibal or if it originates from Carib, which is a term for the savage inhabitants of the New World. Here Shakespeare has purposely given him a name relating to two different things which makes the audience consider his character before he has even entered the stage. Prospero, left to his own devices on the island, learns much about how to control nature, the elements and people and immediately, selfishly becomes the ruler of the island. After discovering that Caliban tried to rape Miranda in a frantic attempt to people else This isle with Calibans Prospero threatens Caliban with painful punishments and orders him to leave, which he obeys. Throughout the play, Prospero exploits Caliban as a slave, using him to get logs and go on errands for him and Miranda. This is Calibans punishment for his attempted rape. Prospero feels that this is the right thing to do and that Caliban deserves to be punished for this terrible thing he attempted to do, however, he does not see how Caliban might feel about his island being taken away from him. Considering this point, Caliban is also an uncivilised creature when Prospero arrives on the island with a beautiful daughter in tow so when Caliban sees that he has got a chance to breed, he takes it. Then when Prospero reacts, with good reason, nonetheless, too harshly, he illustrates the fact that Prospero is narrow-minded, as he cannot see the other point of view. It also proves that he is quite stubborn as he will not admit that he was wrong in usurping the island from Caliban despite the fact that Prospero, of all people, should know how it feels to have something precious taken away from him. Shakespeare presents Prospero in this way to make the audience feel that he is very hypocritical. Prospero takes the island away from Caliban when really he should know that it is wrong. Although Caliban should not have tried to rape Miranda, he was on the island first and then Prospero came along and took his island from him; This islands mine by Sycorax my mother, Which thou takst from me. Caliban talks of how Prospero was so courteous to him when they arrived on the island so Caliban showed him all the qualities othisle and now Prospero keeps him imprisoned like a pig, and here you sty me In this hard rock, whiles you do keep from The rest otheisland. .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93 , .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93 .postImageUrl , .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93 , .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93:hover , .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93:visited , .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93:active { border:0!important; } .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93:active , .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93 .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uffc57f750ef93e0a83a8e55bfb96cb93:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: How Shakespeare achieves the comic effects in Act 3, Scene 4, where Malvolio appears "cross-gartered" and in yellow stockings EssayWhen Prospero addresses Caliban, he degrades him to such names as a tortoise, a fish and a beast. He is also then insultingly referred to This misshapen knave and as one who is as disproportiond in his manners As in his shape. However, the audience must remember that Prospero, who described Caliban in these terms, has deliberately enslaved and corrupted him. Therefore, we need to bear this in mind when judging Calibans character from the descriptions Prospero has given us, as demeaning a person by the use of humiliating language is a well-known ruse used by people who wish to vanquish others. Shakespeare refers to Caliban in such a manner using Prospero to show that Prospero has no respect for him despite the fact that Caliban has been enslaved and has obeyed his commands willingly. This proves that Prospero, after, years of dedicated and committed service from Caliban, still will not believe that maybe it is time to release Caliban from his power. Ariel is a spirit of the air. Shakespeare names him this to illustrate the fact that he is magical, he performs stunts for Prospero. He is quick and elegant, airy and occasionally playful. In media res, Ariel was captured in a tree by Sycorax, Calibans mother. Twelve years later Prospero released him. Prospero then keeps Ariel as a slave until the end of the play, where he sets him free. However, throughout the play, Ariel wants absolute liberty and Prospero keeps reminding him of his obligations and the gratitude that Ariel should have towards him for releasing him; Dost thou forget From what a torment I did free thee? This shows that Prospero feels that Ariel owes his life to Prospero for freeing him, this is proved when Ariel asks for my liberty Prospero replies with a threat to lock Ariel away for another twelve years: If thou murmurst, I will rend an oak  And peg thee in his knotty entrails till  Thou hast howled away twelve winters.  Is the way that Prospero takes advantage of Ariel right or does Ariel owe it to him? It seems that Prospero has forgotten all senses of his complete good natured character. Ariel deserves the freedom he pleads for because, as he reminds Prospero, he has never lied or cheated and has been faithful to him throughout:Remember I have done thee worthy service,   Told thee no lies, made no mistakings, served  Without or grudge or grumblings

Is Racism the Result of Ignorance Essay Example

Is Racism the Result of Ignorance Paper The Oxford English Dictionary describes racism as the belief that all members of a racial group possess the characteristics, therefore rendering it possible to determine whether it is either inferior or superior to other races. Racism has been around since the dawn of mankind, and caused many genocides (most notably the Holocaust, however less well known was the Armenian Massacre during and after the First World War), apartheids (in South Africa and also in the USA) as well as making some people to ask the question What causes Racism and unhappiness between people of different ethnic backgrounds? Many believe the cause is in fact Ignorance and little understanding of other cultures, however, many believe it is much more complex, and there are more than one reasons. This essay shall attempt to ultimately answer the question Is Racism the Result of Ignorance? To understand what causes racism, one must know what the different types of racism are, as well as their effects. Unfortunately for the reader, there are many effects and types of racism that simply cannot be summarised completely, however we shall study the main types of racism, and what effect they have on certain if not all ethnic groups. We will write a custom essay sample on Is Racism the Result of Ignorance specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on Is Racism the Result of Ignorance specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on Is Racism the Result of Ignorance specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer One of the main types is Institutional or State Racism. This means that the government, the state, or perhaps even educational institutions cause racial discrimination on a large scale, with the ability to influence individuals, and cause them to act in a certain way, whether it be protesting against it, or also discriminating against others because they believe in the cause. For example, if a school only accepted white children, Asians and Latin Americans, but not Black students, this could be seen as a form of institutional racism. The effects are quite obvious in this case, the disallowed families would perhaps form a demonstration against the institution, with or in some cases without result. Another example which is much more famous is Britains monitoring of people from an Islamic background. The protests in this case would be much larger, as it would seem that the State generally believes that most Muslims are terrorists, or at least a large amount. This can be linked to the theme of Islamophobia (the belief that many, or all Muslims are in some kind of terrorist organisation. This word was coined after the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers in 2001. Although Muslim Extremists probably performed the attacks, the reaction was foolish. Many scholars see this as a result of ignorance, however we shall refer back to this in the conclusion). Another type of racism is racial or ethnic discrimination. This could also be on a large scale and often is, however this type tends not to be organised by a group. Rather, it is just showing prejudice against other ethnic groups, and treating them differently (not necessarily badly). The effects are a little more complex. Some may indeed also protest, however many others would simply do nothing. While in Institutional Racism, the aim of a protest is to mainly effect the view of a government and also influence individuals, anti-racial discrimination demonstrations are mainly aimed at changing the general view of the public, not as much the government. Another form of racism is Historical Economic Racism or Social Disparity. This means that some individuals are prejudiced towards other races as a consequence of historical events. For example some English believe Germans to still be Nazis, even after 65 years since the end of the Second World War. This is also linked to the idea that ignorance causes racism, and also Nationalism. This means that one group of people (in this case the English) believe they are superior to all other races. For example 69 years ago Hitler corrupted the minds of many, leading them to believe they were the Aryan race (the ultimate race). Many British dont know that the Nazis admired British because they saw them as strong, however this would do little to hinder their view on Germans. This is a brilliant example of ignorance causing racism. Many see racism as a result of ignorance, however personally, I believe it is much more complex, with more reasons. Racism has been present throughout our species history. The idea that anything different may indeed be a threat, is in our genetic code, and is present in all animals. For example, a dog protects its property from foxes, and is willing to attack them if they enter. However in modern society, this idea is known as Xenophobia. A prime example of this in popular use throughout the world (mainly the Western World) is Islamophobia. Many do act in a racist manner as a result of ignorance, however this arises a new question: What about the racists that were well educated? Another cause of racism is intolerance. Another is close-mindedness. As one can see, there are so many reasons, and so many different views that one certain definition of the cause is impossible to coin. It is truly up to the individual to make his or her own judgement.

China History essays

China History essays China historians have provided many definitions of the May Fourth Movement. Most scholars believe the movement, also called the New Culture Movement, is inextricably tied to the May Fourth Incident of 1919.(1) On that day approximately five thousand students descended on Peking to demonstrate against the Versailles Peace Conference. The days events included marching, the shouting of slogans, and eventually the ransacking and burning of the house of foreign minister Tsao Ju-lin. Student protesters participated in similar protests throughout the nations major cities, and the May Fourth Incident quickly assumed increased significance and developed into a national awakening known as the May Fourth Movement. The May Fourth Movement began an outburst of young intellectuals fighting against imperialists and warlords. These young students attacked Confucianism, initiated a vernacular style of writing, and promoted science. These and many other accomplishments justify the May Fourth M ovement as being the most significant cultural revolution in Chinese history. This paper will discuss accomplishments of the May Fourth Movement such as the promotion of education for women, the educational reforms, and the attacks on Confucianism. While political theorists and activists, such as Sun Yat-sen, were aggressively pursuing political and economic modernization while retaining their roots in Confucianism, the May Fourth Movement had its specific goal of a complete elimination of traditional Confucian culture and replacing it with a culture resembling that of Western culture and beliefs. Intellectual revolutionaries between 1917 and 1923 spearheaded a movement to adopt Western science, culture, and democratic principles. ...

History of Papermaking From Papyrus to Dixie Cups

History of Papermaking From Papyrus to Dixie Cups The word paper is derived from the name of the reedy plant papyrus, which grows abundantly along the Nile River in Egypt. However, true paper is made of pulped cellulose fibers like wood, cotton or flax. First There Was Papyrus Papyrus is made from the sliced sections of the flower stem of the papyrus plant, pressed together and dried, and then used from writing or drawing. Papyrus appeared in Egypt around 2400 B.C. Then There Was Paper A courtier named Tsai-Lun, from Lei-yang in China, was the first recorded inventor of paper circa 105 A.D. Tsai-Lun presented paper and a papermaking process to the Chinese Emperor and that was noted in the imperial court records. There may have been papermaking in China earlier than the above date, but inventor Tsai-Lun did much for the spread of papermaking technology in China. Chinese Papermaking The ancient Chinese first made paper in the following fashion. Plant fibers such as hemp were soaked and beaten into a sludgeThe sludge was strained through a cloth sieve attached to a frame that also served as a drying platform for the resulting paper Newsprint Charles Fenerty of Halifax made the first paper from wood pulp (newsprint) in 1838. Charles Fenerty was helping a local paper mill maintain an adequate supply of rags to make paper when he succeeded in making paper from wood pulp. He neglected to patent his invention and others did patent papermaking processes based on wood fiber. Corrugated Papermaking - Cardboard In 1856, Englishmen, Healey and Allen, received a patent for the first corrugated or pleated paper. The paper was used to line mens tall hats. American, Robert Gair promptly invented the corrugated cardboard box in 1870. These were pre-cut flat pieces manufactured in bulk that opened up and folded into boxes. On December 20, 1871, Albert Jones of New York NY, patented a stronger corrugated paper (cardboard) used as a shipping material for bottles and glass lanterns. In 1874, G. Smyth built the first single sided corrugated board making machine. Also in 1874, Oliver Long improved upon the Jones patent and invented a lined corrugated cardboard. Paper Bags The first recorded historical reference to grocery paper bags was made in 1630. The use of paper sacks only really started to take off during the Industrial Revolution: between 1700 and 1800. Margaret Knight (1838-1914) was an employee in a paper bag factory when she invented a new machine part to make square bottoms for paper bags. Paper bags had been more like envelopes before. Knight can be considered the mother of the grocery bag, she founded the Eastern Paper Bag Company in 1870. On February 20, 1872, Luther Crowell also patented a machine that manufactured paper bags. Paper Plates Paper foodservice disposables products were first made at the beginning of the 20th century. The paper plate was the first single-use foodservice product invented in 1904. Dixie Cups Hugh Moore was an inventor who owned a paper cup factory, located next door to the Dixie Doll Company. The word Dixie was printed on the doll companys front door. Moore saw the word every day, which reminded him of dixies, the ten-dollar bank notes from a New Orleans bank that had the French word dix printed on the face of the bill. The bank had a great reputation in the early 1800s. Moore decided that dixies was a great name. After getting permission from his neighbor to use the name, he renamed his paper cups Dixie Cups. It should be mentioned that Moores paper cups first invented in 1908 were originally called health cups and replaced the single repeat-use metal cup that had been used with water fountains.

A critical review and discussion of research based evidence relating Essay

A critical review and discussion of research based evidence relating to hand hygiene in community nursing hand washing versus the use of alcohol based hand gel - Essay Example The use of an alcohol-based hand gels is the next best option to soap and water. In fact, it is also highly recommended by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC 2003). Isopropyl and ethyl alcohol is proven to be effective in fighting against bacteria, tuberculosis, viruses, and fungi (Kozier 2004). In relation to hand washing, this paper will focus on discussion and the comparison of different research approaches in order to come up with evidences regarding the importance of hand washing in a community area, the use of an alcohol-based hand gels as an alternative to hand washing, and some of the health benefits that we could get from a simple hand washing with the use of either an ordinary or anti-bacterial soap. The four (4) research studies that I have included in this paper all ended up with the evidence that a simple hand washing with either an ordinary or an anti-bacterial soap and the maintenance of short and clean nails can help us stay in good health and free from a long list of infectious diseases such as upper respiratory diseases like colds and flu, and a mortality causing diseases like diarrhoea. In my research, I have included the importance of hand washing. Every nurse should know the exact reason why hand washing is very important in our chosen career. In line with this, we must have to be knowledgeable of the proper way of hand washing and the use of the alcohol-based hand gels. For this reason, I also have included the guidelines on hand washing and the use of the alcohol-based hand gels. There are four (4) research studies in this paper. Two (2) are evidenced-based practice showing that hand washing can prevent and minimize infectious diseases like colds and flu and diarrhoea. The third study will show that the use of the alcohol-based hand gels will increase the rate of hand washing compliance due to the convenience that comes with from using it. The last study proves that long nails could

Scanners and Xerox 2 Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Scanners and Xerox 2 - Assignment Example establishment, the organization, which is currently headquartered at Norwalk Connecticut after migrating from Stamford Connecticut, has overtime been termed by various stakeholders as the ideal document management Corporation. This was major because Xerox Corporation has been at the forefront in management of data worldwide. In the recent past, however, multiple business pressures from various sectors of the economy have threatened the dominance of Xerox Corporation. In this essay, we are going to dwell on some of the multiple business pressures that have been threatening the dominance of Xerox Corporation as well as the strategies that the multinational organization adopted to stay relevant within the market. In addition, the essay touches on the role of IT in creating the business pressures and how IT can be used to avert some of the challenges. One of the most significant pressures that Xerox Corporation has faced is the recent past is the fluctuation in equipment sales. In the past, most of the products and services that were introduced by the American-based multinational were widely accepted within the society. In fact, the revenue that the Corporation used to earn from the sale of equipment was considerably high. In the recent past, however, the Corporation has failed to move some of the innovations that prioritized, making the multinational lose its grasp of the market (Walker, 2003). Another business pressure that has been faced by the multinational is the fact that it has on several occasions focused on high-profit margin businesses instead of investments that have rapid turns of low-margins; consequently, the organization has seen its earnings plunge considerably. Similarly, Xerox Corporation faced exodus of most of their innovative employees who were out in search of greener pastures. Various economic experts hold the belief that Xerox Corporation has been under significant business pressure because it has faced strong competition from other entrants

A Separate Peace Essay Example for Free

A Separate Peace Essay One of the main focuses in the novel A Separate Peace is the friendship of Gene Forrester and Phineas. One would assume that two completely opposite people wouldn’t have such a strong relationship. They both have different views of the world. Where one would find strength the other finds weakness. With having two opposing personalities as the main characters, it’s easy for the reader to identify with one more than the other. It also gives the reader a chance to admire, as well as pity, both Gene and Phineas. One of the most important differences between Gene and Finny is their views of the world. Gene has a more cynical world view. On the other hand, Finny’s view of the world is very pure and naive. Finny truly believes that everyone is good in the world. Another thing that sets Gene apart from Finny is their strengths and weaknesses. Gene is one of the top students of his class, while Finny just gets by with below average grades. But what Finny lacks in academic achievements, he makes up for in athletics. Read more:Â  Write about a person you admire essay Finny also has the natural ability to lead others and has a non conforming attitude, whereas Gene is follower and has a more conforming attitude. As well as many other novels, A Separate Peace includes easily relatable characters. While reading the novel, I discovered that there are certain qualities of both Gene and Finny that I can identify with. After careful consideration, I realized that I most identify with Gene rather than Finny. He and I both are drawn to people with larger than life personalities. I can also relate to his insecure feelings that come with having friendships with those types of personalities. His strength in academics is another trait of his that I can identify with. Even though I identify more with Gene, I also pity him. I pity that his jealousy pushed him to do something so harmful to his supposed best friend. I also pity that fact that he doesn’t have enough self confidence to tell Finny the truth. That being said, the person I admire would be Finny. He has this natural ability for being a leader, and it’s said several times that he can get away with anything. I also admire that instead of him moping about his leg, he twisted his own reality just to be happy. In conclusion, the main relationship in A Separate Peace involves two people with opposing personalities. They both view the world differently. Gene has more of a pessimistic view of the world, while Phineas’s view of the world is very innocent. Where Phineas finds strength, Gene finds weakness. While I indentify more with the character Gene, I also pity him for the outcome of his poor decisions. Instead, I admire Phineas. I admire his self confidence and attitude towards life.

A child Called It by Dave Pelzer Essay -- essays research papers

One Child’s Courage to Survive: â€Å" A Child Called It † Abstract This is one of the best, yet saddest books that I have ever read. There are so many bad things out there that are happening to good people. We just have no idea. You never know what is going on behind closed doors. I am so lucky not to have experienced anything like this growing up. There is so much reality in this book, but I never knew that reality was ever this awful. It brought me to a realization that I have never known before. It is extremely sad that something like this really did happen to such a sweet little boy. Summary A Child Called â€Å"It† is a story based on a real life little boy’s tribulations with his mothers shocking abuse. The first part of Dave's life was idyllic in his memory--he says his family was "the Brady Bunch"--a loving mother and father with whom he enjoyed wonderful holidays and a happy trip to the Russian River. Everyone on the outside thought that David’s family was perfect. No one in their neighborhood would have suspected anything was wrong. All that changed when Dave was in first grade. For no known reason, his mother singled him out from his siblings and began abusing him. The abuse began relatively mildly. When he and his brothers did something wrong, Dave was the one to receive punishment--at first simply banishment to the corner of a bedroom. Then, his mother began spending her days watching TV and drinking beer. Easily irritated, she yelled at Dave for the slightest reason, or sometimes for no reason at all. Soon, instead of making him go down to the basement, Mrs. Pelzer smashed Dave's face against the mirror, then made him repeat, over and over, "I'm a bad boy! I'm a bad boy!" He was forced to stand for hours staring into that mirror. Dave's father soon joined The Mother, as David called her, in her drinking. He, too, knew David was a "good boy." He did not join in the abuse, but he did not to stop it, either. David was treated like a slave in his own home. His mother treated him as if he wasn’t even a member of the family like a nobody or an â€Å"It†. She first referred to him as, â€Å"The Boy, then it quickly changed to It†. Nobody at his school liked him, they called him "Pelzer Smelzer" because his mom never washed his clothes and made him wear the same thing every day. After school, o... ...er of the Year. In 1993 Dave was honored as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Americans (TOYA), joining a distinguished group of alumni that includes Chuck Yeager, Christopher Reeve, Anne Bancroft, John F. Kennedy, Orson Wells and Walt Disney. (Dave Pelzer Biography 2002, Para. 2) In 1994 Dave was the only American to be selected as one of The Outstanding Young Persons of the World (TOYP), for his efforts including child abuse awareness and prevention, as well as for instilling resilience in others. During the Centennial Olympic games, Dave was a torchbearer, carrying the coveted flame (Dave Pelzer Biography 2002, Para. 2) References American Psychological Association. Physical Education Management Plan

Upon arrival to class students will be greeted with enthusiasm and eagerness to begin class. Students Students will engage in a warm-up review activity that includes questions and problems from previous lessons and assignments. Instruction Format Instruction will be given in a whole-to-parts format. I will demonstrate the new activity, present someone who can demonstrate it, or provide a video of each activity I introduce as a whole. Then I will break the activity into â€Å"pieces† and teach it section by section with several opportunities to recite all learned parts of the activity. This will continue until all the learned parts can be recited fluently as a whole. Behavior Management To ensure minimal undesired behavior I will navigate around the gymnasium constantly in no predictable pattern. With my back to the wall at all possible times my eyes will consistently scan the room for proper technique and opportunities to assistant with improving a student’s technique. My classroom will be managed in a manner that promotes discussion and the sharing of ideas between all members. Students will respect and empathize with fellow classmates and their physical differences. It will be arranged so that I can observe and monitor everyone’s behavior. Also, class activities will be arranged with an ease of transition from one station or skill to the next. My relationship with my students will be open and honest, and non-threatening to learning and mistakes during the learning process. I will make a conscious effort from day to day to treat my students the way I would like for them to treat one another. My class will also have a voice in the selection of activities so that they feel a part of something special and that their opinions and thoughts matter. Students that display undesired behavior will be given a set time to refrain from the activity with the rest of the class. With each repeated offense the time will be multiplied by the number of offenses. Student Engagement It is important to keep students engaged while in class. So, students will be provided with ample physical and thought-provoking activities during each lesson that are well prepared and presented by me. Each activity will be presented thoroughly and clearly so as to give the students a clear picture of what is being asked of them. In addition, the curriculum promotes the use of elaborate physically enriched activities that students work on individually or as a small group once they have received proper instruction. As the teacher I will make frequent eye contact with the students to communicate a genuine interest in their learning. Assessment An effective teacher is in constant motion mentally and physically in the classroom. This attentiveness allows for a constant informal assessment of student learning and behavior. I will maintain anecdotal notes of student performance. Peer performance checklist will also be used for some activities. This form of assessment gives the students an opportunity to evaluate each other as well as give themselves a better idea of what is expected of them.

life in the dithyrambic chorus essays

life in the dithyrambic chorus essays Upon the setting sun I, Hecubus, fondly recall the days of pride and honor I felt in my tribe, as a member of a dramatic, dithyrambic chorus. Acting was not simply my occupation, but a lifestyle highly revered and respected by my fellow Athenian citizens. We entertained, taught moral lessons of the past, illustrated human flaw, but most importantly, we gave the audience a release. During the time I preformed with my chorus, drama was closely tied to the polis, joining the people, the government, and the Gods through public festivals. I felt immense pride to have played and active role in the community bond that was created. The most important of these festivals was, and remains, the City Dionysia. The exhausting four-day competition was held every spring, in honor of the god Dionysos (Amos and Lang 129). The festival opened with a formal and elaborate processional, where I and my chorus of fifty men would perform ceremonial dances at numerous alters, and ended with sacrifices of wine and sweet meat at the sacred precinct of Dionysus. This was a most glorious event surrounded in the beauty and rebirth of the land! A statue of Dionysos, guided by the intense glow of torchlight, was then carried into the theatre and a reenactment of Dionysos' initial entry into Athens was preformed. This statue was a constant presence in the theatre. City Dionysia was highly attended and drew visitors and men of political power from all of Greece. The crowd was not afraid to get into the performances...many times they would cheer and boo, and occasionally throw things at us. Three of the four days were reserved for tragedies, and the fourth day was for satyr and comedies (Cameron and Gillespie 74). Between the great plays, the dithyrambic contests would be held, where the choruses, including my dynamic troupe, would battle each other for the prize. Wine was abundant, and the all day plays and hard stone benches seemed to effect me...

Buying Yourself Time

Buying Yourself Time Entrepreneurial guru Seth Godin recently spoke about speaking. He believes for a five-minute presentation you give a four-minute talk and take your time. You dont want to rush, and you dont want to appear less professional The concept works for every other aspect of writing as well. Submission deadlines Submit early rather than late or exactly on time. Being late is inexcusable, and being on time can give the impression you rushed to the end. Word count Submit under the word limit rather than over. The latter appears as if you do not respect the publications rules. Newsletters / Blog posts Better to be shorter than longer. If in doubt, cut back. Readers appreciate it. First drafts Give yourself less time to write, just as long as its daily. To press too hard or to give yourself a time span that you cannot honor day after day is to invite disenchantment with the job. Query letters Brevity is your friend. It appears you have more command of the language and craft, and itll make you concentrate your words and your message. We all have the same amount of time to perform while on this planet; however, you must coordinate that performance. Time management is critical, even as a creative. Buy yourself time and you will not only look good to fellow professionals, but youll feel better about yourself in your accomplishments.
